phoneset turns a phone into the microphone and the headphones of a Windows or Mac PC. The phone's microphone feeds whatever app on the PC is listening for one, Discord, Teams, OBS, a recording, and whatever the PC is playing comes out of the phone. It all travels over the local Wi-Fi, straight between the two devices.

Not on the App Store or Google Play yet. When there is a listing to open, a link goes here. The PC program can already be downloaded from the releases page.

How it works

phone mic ──Wi-Fi──▶ PC ──▶ virtual cable ──▶ app's mic
phone speaker ◀──Wi-Fi── PC ◀── what the PC plays

There are two halves. The phone app is the microphone and the headphones. The PC program is a small terminal program with an optional tray icon, for Windows 10 and 11 and for macOS 12 and later. The two pair once, by scanning a QR code the PC shows or by typing a 6-digit code, and after that connecting is a tap on the PC's name in the app.

Windows and macOS cannot make a microphone out of thin air, so the PC program plays the phone's voice into a virtual audio cable and apps record from its other end: VB-CABLE on Windows, BlackHole on macOS. The headphone side needs no extra driver on Windows, and none on macOS 14.2 or later.

No account, no server

There is no sign-in, no account, no analytics and no crash reporting. phoneset has no server of its own and the app sends nothing to the developer. The only network traffic of the app is with the user's own PC on the local network, and everything after the first handshake is encrypted with a key that only those two devices share. The privacy policy lists all of it.

Open source

Both halves are in one public repository under the MIT license. The PC program is written in Go, and the phone app is an Expo app that renders SwiftUI on iOS and Jetpack Compose on Android from one codebase. The wire protocol and its security model are written down in the repository, so what the app does on the network can be read rather than taken on trust.

Where to go next

Setup, an FAQ and the contact address are on the support page. The PC program is installed with one command from the source repository, or downloaded from the latest release.
